Sumps!

Can someone explain to me just what a Sump is for, how it should be setup and how it works without somehow flooding your entire floor.

Are these being used instead of filters now?

Are these only used on these "reef ready" tanks i keep hearing about or can these be used on normal tanks too?

Do the hang on Skimmers go on the sump boxes instead of the tank?

Can someone post some pics explaining all the stuff I'm seeing. I'm seeing ones with balls, ones with sand, ones with 2 tubes, ones with 4 tubes. I'm just getting to where I want to start my first tank but Sumps seem so complex it may be better for me to just start with a simple skimmer/filter

Most of the sumps I see look like they're mounted under the tank and if so I don't see how all the water just doesn't run out.

Re: Sumps!

Short answer a sump is essentially another tank in which you can have greater biological filtration-bioballs, added water volume, an area to add equipment, heaters, skimmer, Ca reactor..., or it can be a refugium, hence the sand you saw in whatever pics you were looking at. Reef ready need sumps since they have the drilled tank. And yes any tank can have one you would just need an overflow box
