Uncultured rock

I was a lfs today and they had just got their live rock in, lfs guy said it was cheaper to buy it that way, you have to wait for ammonia/nitrite cycle, but you get alot more little critters (he named them, but I dont know what he was talking about)

It was a bit smelly, but nice shapes and colors.

What makes the real diff between cultured and uncultured? the cycling?

Re: Uncultured rock

I think we're talking about whether is has been cured or not. Cured meaning it has been cycled in a tank.

Re: Uncultured rock

i used cured and uncured rock for my cycle.if u add cured rock u will cycle your tank alot faster but if u add uncured rock your tank will cycle a lil slower but i think it would be better off. u would benefit more because the bacteria would have a higher load of nitrates ammonia and all that other crap to take care of u would basically be give your bacteria a work out.

Re: Uncultured rock

On that same subject, I am setting up a new 75 Gal reef tank and I plan on ordering 90lbs of Fiji LR from F & S online. It is already cured but they recommend recurring due to die off during shipping. Can I recure it right in my display tank since it will only have the SW mix and substrate in it? It probably shouldn't take to long for the recurring process to take place. Do I need to perform partial water changes during the process, or will my sump be sufficient to recirculate clean water?

Yes. If you are still in the cycle it is a great time to do this. If adding to a mature tank add it like you would fish. I little at a time.
