| Re: live rock? It prob. does not have any life left to need curing if it completely dried. It would be OK to use as base rock, but it will never be IMO true live rock again.
Live rock has many catagories and opinions will very, but here is my take.
1. "true" live rock, is harvested from the ocean, it is never exposed to the air. It is bagged underwater and shipped direct to the end user.
2. live rock, is harvested from the ocean and shipped in bulk to distributers, they then set it up in curing vats and eventually send it to retailers (LFS), to be purchased at retail price.
3. seeded live rock, is base rock placed in a tank with live or true live rock to spread coraline and some of the "critters" to the base rock, this is normally done to provide the highest profit, IMO, seeded rock will never be real live rock although most LFS will tell you it is as good. The fact is, live rock takes many years to form, many of the life forms that are on and in, yes in, the real LR will not move from one piece of rock to another, some will but many will not, those "critters" are not able to multiply in any aquarium, only the ocean is ther breeding ground. It will look exactly like the live rock, but it will not have all of the benefits
4. base rock, is used as a substitute for LR, if your tank requires 100 LBS of LR, you can use about 1/3 of base and it will save some $$$$ and end up looking just like the real thing.
This is how I catagorize LR, I have been doing this hobby since almost all LR was actually harvested from the ocean and bagged under water so you got the real deal, now many regulations later and for the sake of profit, seeded base, cured and non cured are much more common and less expensive the rock that never is exposed to the air. |
