| Re: live rock? Just remember, This country was started on disagreements and hurt feelings . I in turn, don`t think the world is gonna come to an end by taking l/r from the ocean for a fishtank.

| Re: live rock? No the world may not end, but it could end for specific species. Personally I like the idea of cultured live rock. I like what tampabaysaltwater has done for instance by taking rock and leasing a section of the ocean to cultivate it.

| Re: live rock? Thanks for the replies.....I some what know a little difference between the rocks but just the simple basics so far. Me and my husband bought some "live rock" from a LFS 2 weekends ago and its been in the tank since then with a few hermit crabs. Thats what the guy told us to cycle with. But so far I have seen absolutely nothing in, around or on the rocks. He charged 8.00 a lb for live rock, so how do I know this is really "Live" rock and not base rock? I dont really want to pay 8.00 a lb for something thats not live rock.
Thanks again! |

| Re: live rock? Most of the activity will be at night, you can use a blue or red flashlight and shine it into the tank at night. You should be able to see some pods then if they are not visible during the day. It is tough to tell for sure without putting it under the microscope to see if it is just base rock, seeded base rock or ocean live rock, as the appearence can be the same to the naked eye. Many people think any coraline coated rock is live rock and although it appears the same the benifits are not even close as I described earlier.

| Re: live rock? Tampabaysaltwater.com = great company. They actually ship their live rock in water. I'm not aware of another company that does that still. You will see critters all over your rock if you buy from them. I've seen lots of tanks with that type of rock in it and it looks great.... wish I would have ordered from them. Hard to know any better though when you are setting up your first tank. Liveaquaria has resonable prices as well. Much cheaper than $8 a lb shipped to your door.

Thanks again! | Ouch.. $8/lb is a lot.
My LFS sells for $6/lb and I thought it was a lot.
Anyone know where to get good live rocks at reasonable prices online besides Tampabaysaltwater with reasonable shipping charges? |
