Nano/Vision/Other Cube Aquariums - Experience/Recommendations (good?/bad?)

Hi All,
I've been out of the Salt Water Aquarium hobby for about 10+ years now and I'm thinking about starting a simple one up again soon. I'm familiar with the process/cycling, as I used to have a 30gal & 55gal successful setup back then. I've noticed as basic technology improves in 10 years, so do home aquarium setups.

I've read about these Nano Cube aquariums and really like the fact that they are small and everything is contained in one unit (lighting, filtration, etc...) - no outside canisters, etc...

Before I throw money into a "CUBE", I'd like to hear your experiences with them:

1. Would you recommend one?
2. What brand do you have?
3. How long have you had it?
4. Any problems with it?
5. How many gallons?
6. Is filter replacement/cleaning a hassle?

I'd like to get one as SMALL as possible (like a kitchen or office desktop tank - without a stand), and eventually get some live rock, clowns, and shrimp - nothing too extravagant)

Any help will be appreciated!
Thanks...
- MDK

Welcome to the forum

I have a 24 gallon nano cube. I really like it for all the reasons you stated. It get tight if you want to add any extra filtration like a skimmer (I am not sure you can get even a micro in the back chamber). I really like the rounded corners and viewing that is available. The one negative I have heard was on the early model nano 12s. There are two different light switches for normal and actinic lights and each has it's own cord. Somehow on the early 12s if you did not have both plugged in the second plug could become electrified and shock people. I have always had both mine plugged in but it is a fairly serious problem

Loman,
Thanks for the info! This is exactly the kind of feedback I'm looking for. Great tips and info.

I understand the complexities of a reef tank with over-crouding (bio-overloading), water quality, patience (cycling), and I'm also concerned that a reef tank of these smaller sizes (Nanos) would be asking for trouble. I've been reading other's experiences with Nano aquariums on this (older) thread:

It seems that if you are well educated on Salt Water aquariums, very patient, and don't abuse the over-crouding factor, these tanks seem to do pretty well.

I was thinking about going with a 12 Gallon at first (as I said, I'd like to have a desktop / non-stand setup) ... however, chances of success seem better with a 24 gal.

Anyone care to add to this.... ?
