Water Changes

Do you heat the water when you do them? In my big tank I change 20 gallons at a time, (4) 5 gallon jugs. I would need 4 heaters to do so, unless someone has some helpful advice.

I currently only have a cleaning crew and damsels in the tank. No corals to worry about.

Re: Water Changes

I would look into using a 20-30g rubbermaid stoage bin. They are safe to use with SW. This way you only need one bigger heater and you are set. You might also want to pick up a powerhead to mix the salt up for you.....

Hey monkey man, how large a tank is it? If it is say 100 or more an option is to do 2 small changes of ten gal. Your water will be room temp. and if you mix the salt thoroughly and let sit for a day, adding 10 gal. one day of room temp.water shouldn't affect tank temp then wait a day and do the other 10 gal. at least until you get the rubber maid.

Re: Water Changes

It's a 125, so I figure with 170 lbs of rock in there probably about 100 gallons of water. The main thing for me is moving water around. My RO filter is upstairs by the tank and I store water downstairs. I just don't want to lug it around the house too much. Now that the tank is running, I think I might move the filter to the basement and only have 1 move that way.

Re: Water Changes

I ran a 1/4" tube from my garage aquarium work area to the tank. It is easy to siphon the tank into buckets but I did not like wheeling in the plastic can. I have a transfer pump that does about 10GPH. It takes a while but it give the fish time to adjust to the new water over a 1.5 hour time span.
