Re: salinity

Yes it will read high levels. Mix alot of salt and water in a cup and try that to see if you meter is working properly. Salt water is very tricky. Good luck man

Re: salinity

i will try that and thanks TCKK

I tested some really salty water and the hydrometer is working fine so that means the salinity in the tank is very low and i need to add some salt but what i wanna figure out is why did the salinity drop so much if you guys have any suggestions that would be great thanks.

I think it might be because....

i have a deep six hydrometer and it was working fine even though it wasnt on a flat surface
...you might not have been reading it right in the first place. It will not give you an accurate reading unless it is perfectly level. If you put some salt water in your hydrometer and tip it up or down, you can get whatever reading you want. This is how I figured out that my living room floor isn't level and was thrown off a little bit for about a month myself.

i have noticed a small amount of salt build up on the outside of my protein skimmer
Make sure that there is no water leaking from your skimmer. If an O-ring or some seal isn't sitting right, small amounts of water can leak and evaporate, leaving the salt. I have this problem in one little corner of my sump and salt builds up over time. (sometimes called salt creep) Otherwise I don't think the salt is being pulled out of your tank but leaving the water.

Re: salinity

You might have to adjust your skimmer a little bit then. What type/brand do you have?
