microwaving water

hey i know its been posted by me before but i didnt get to see it before we got hacked.

so can you microwave ro/di water and not alter its properties?

this is to speed up heating the water for tankchanges because i keep mine in the garage and its about 35f out there. it takes literally forever for a aquarium heater to heat it to 78f. expecially if your waiting for it to heat up.

Re: microwaving water

I guess the logical question would be; "Why are you keeping it there"? No basement or somewhere in the house, like a closet?

Uncle Jed is right on the money. I replied to you before the original post was wiped out, seems like the problem would be dealing with the volume of water needed to do a water change, would be a pain in the you know what, unless it is for a nano tank, I wouldn't want the mess and hassle of microwaving 5 -10 gallons of salty R/O water everyweek at my house, wife would beat me senseless.

Re: microwaving water

Don't think I would do it either but it shouldn't alter it at all since most of the impurities are removed and you not adding anything....

Another suggestion would be to have a 5 gal bucket or 2 and fill them a couple of days before water change/addition so that it would be at least room temp....

Re: microwaving water

i have a container that holds a gallon and fits in the microwave. i dont need much more than that every other day. and if i dont have to keep 1 5g downstairs then im happier. theres no room for it. it just sits infront of the tank. so why not just keep it outside with the rest of the water? if i can microwave 1g and add it to 2g and get my temp im ok with that and having to haul it back outside when im done. the point is i dont have it sitting infront of the tank all the time. because i constanly have to heat it and reheat the next batch ect. so it never disapears.

Re: microwaving water

I have no clue on heating water in microwave, my guess is it wont hurt. You could always put a heater in your bin in your garage, this is how I keep my water out there warm.

Re: microwaving water

okay, im pretty new to this , but i have put water in the microwave, it does not seem to have any adverse affect, then again, i just added my first fish like 3 days ago, and have not done it since, but i was planning on doing it again, the starfish that came in my live rock did not seem to mind though, and the test result's were good, so i hope it's ok.(hope that helped somehow)
