Re: microwaving water

well after a month or more of water microwaving mines fine as well. but i did it with a glass jar. but there is 1 noticable difference. the water isnt cloudy when you put it in like before were it like of is silky looking almost.. (im sure you have seen it before since every time i added fresh water to mix in with some old water it use to do that.)pre microwaving, using a heater. other than that no diffs, everything is still alive just like before and growing. algae lvls the same, as well as all water params.

but a totall bummer the lfs i usually goto closed and moved 15miles away. so now theres nothing in close reach. i need to get a ro/di system for home.....

Re: microwaving water

15 miles wow that is far
ROFLMAO I am over an hour from anything like a LFS (I am an hour from just about everthing but the lake) I understand the water heating issue though I am short on space and it gets cold here by tank standards (house is rarely over 55 and out side even in summer 78 is considered a "hot" day (no laughing) locals here are just as happy with 30-40 outside. As for heatingwater I admit I have a FW but I heat water in the kettle and mix it to get it close to temp. As for the clearer water I would think the water gets hotter in a microwave and therefore disolves some of the addins better than with just the heateralone as the warmer the water the more it can disolve and hold so even mixing it you allow for more to be disloved. (I hope that makes sense to you it makes a great basic kids science project) Good luck

Re: microwaving water

I hate to be a bad attitude betty, but why dont you break down and buy one of those... hold on, let me grab the box... titanium tub heaters. the guys at my lfs swore by them and i got one when i did a 50 gal water change on my 100 gal and added that 50 gals of 55 degree water. it brought my tank down to 60 degrees and i freaked out. the one i have is a 300 watt, and it literally heated all 100 gallons from 60 degrees back to 78 within 45 minutes. if yours is not in a HUGE hurry to be heated like mine was, it would probably be really worth it. i bought mine from my lfs(EXTREMELY priced lfs i might add) for 53 bucks, but you can get them online much cheaper. its so worth it.

on the other note, seems like the original poster has a tad bit of a bad attitude. why bother asking for help if youre already hell bent on your own idea and only want to semi-bash what other people(other people with TONS of combined experience, i might add) have to say??

and i full on agree with what nymel said.... i CHOOSE to drive 23 miles away to the lfs i got to because they are excellent. theres tons around here, closer to me, but not nearly as good. 15 miles extra.... psha!

and also what nyrmel said about the heated water aspect, its like when you make hot chocolate with the powdered stuff. the particles of powder dissolve/break down much faster when heated in something like a microwave versus a stovetop, or even in cold milk for that matter! its a typical elementary science project.....

anyways, glad it worked out for you regardless. but maybe next time you could leave the possible fish killing scenarios out of your posts... people tend to frown on that. especially on a FISH forum.
