Water clouds after water change

Every time I do a partial water change my water clouds up for one day and then seems to clear up beautifully after that.

I put Aquasafe water conditioner and a very little marine buffer (raises Ph to 8.4) in the new water and it is not cloudy while it is in the bucket.

Only once I have added about a gallon of the new water to the tank will it start to cloud up and once I have added 3-4 gallons the visibility drops to about 40%.

This will clear up in about 24 hours and look extremely clear. My tests are still returning perfect, no nitri/ates, ammonia, phosphates and good Kh, Ph and Calcium. I have had a fish die recently and thought whatever this is might be the culprit.

Does anyone have an idea what might be happening?

Thanks for the great forum.

Your best bet would be to use r/o water. Using tap will add too many unwanted phosphates, nitrates, silicates. Not to mention copper and iron which are extremely hard to remove from your aquarium. Over time this will all build up in your tank causing problems.

I am no expert at this, but I have read on the salt containers that temporary cloudiness is not uncommon immediately after a water change. What brand of salt are you using?

Also, is it possible you are stirring up dirt or debris in your sand when you make the chage?

I had the same problem with cloudiness, too. But, I don't put my water in a separate tank with a power head for a day to mix around. I am sure that is part of the reason it does that. Are you able to aerate your water?

Obviously this is a very old thread so it might not be relavent anymore, but I wanted to ask if you are suggesting that chris gorrie stop curing water for a day? If so, I have to disagree and would say that doing so isn't to blame for the cloudiness.

Hey chris, do you have the water heated to approx. what the tank water is before you mix the salt? I used to use room temp. and the salt stays suspended and clouded my water although it only took a couple of hours to clear. Since I heat the water a day ahead of time before I mix I no longer have that prob.

Re: Water clouds after water change

oops, I didn't notice how old the thread is, I just am reading everything I can! I think that my cloudy water came from the coldness. I talked to my guy at the LFS and he agreed that it can make the water cloudy if it isn't warm enough. Also, I have a sub-optimal heater, it doesn't have an adjustment on it, and I will need to replace that sometime soon.

ps no, I didn't mean to suggest NOT to mix the water a day ahead of time...I was just saying that because I don't have anywhere to put mine so a powerhead can mix mine a day ahead, I thought that was why mine was so cloudy. But, the day it was the worst was the day the water was probably too cold. I didn't catch your comment the first time I read this...I sure don't mean to be giving any advice, I don't know enough yet!
