| Re: I need alot of help, caring for neighbors tank Ok, this is how I got rid of my bad algae problem. I first tried to pick it off without little success, it grew faster than I could keep up with.
I did this method with 2-5 gallon buckets and a very large igloo(because I have over 150 lbs. of live rock) you need to do this when its time for a waterchange. FIll the buckets with aquarium water about three quarters full. The first bucket will be the one you use to scrub the rocks down with a brush. The second will be to dip the rock in to make sure you didnt miss any algae when scrubbing the rock. Scrub the rock down with a plastic bristle brush, and old toothbrush you wont have to scrub the whole rock just where the light hits the rock and causes the algae to grow. Make sure you use the second bucket to see the algae you missed from the first. When done scrubbing the rock put it back into the tank on one side away from the other rocks. Continue this process till all the rocks have been scrubbed down.
Now that will take care of the algae that has grown already, next you need to find out what source is feeding the algae. In my tank it was a combination of old lighting, phosphates, and nitrates. You will need to take a sample of the water down to a lfs and get the water tested for phosphates. If the level is high you will need to get it out. The best way is a phosphate reactor. they generally run around 35.00 for the reactor and 20.00 for the pump. the reactor media will run around 20.00 as well. |
