instead of an ro/di unit, can I use those hang on tap water purifiers from walmart?

To put it simply, NO. They do not remove anything other than suspended particles

Tap really is bad to use, you would be better off buying RO water from a grocery store.

I am not familar with the Poland brand but most spring water is really just from a municiple supply and ran through effectively one of theose hong on the fawcett filters. It keeps a lot a junk in the water and there is no regulation about it really. If I was buying water I would get distilled. If you are using tap water (which is what most spring water is) then use the water from your own tap (although I think RO/DI is much better)

My local walmart has the fill your own container station. I checked the tds one day and it was at fifteen. The tds will rise quickly though, if I needed emergency water I would first check the last time the filter was serviced. It should be a sheet of paper somewhere on there that tells the last time it was serviced.

Also the label on gallons of water should list if it is RO filtered.
