This is why I love this site. Lots of good posts/ideas here. If I were you I would separate the fish from the main tank and treat them separately with copper. Then, treat the main tank with M. G. As stated before, the UV will help to rid your tank of ich, but not completely. Yes, M. G. is a poision, but that is what you need to rid your tank. As you asked before.... I have about 15 years exp in FW and only less than one year exp in SW. But, my ich info is coming from a friend who has 17 SW tanks in his basement. I think he has been in the hobby for 30+ years. Which means many ich problems! I had one problem with ich in my SW tank and he told me to do what I mentioned before. It worked and it's been months since the ich was removed with no signs of it returning or harm done to the fish(I have 90 lbs of LR as well). He has used this in his reef tanks with LR as well. Although there are many ways to treat ich, I believe this is a good place to start. If you continue to have problems, it may in fact be something else.

Tommy - no worries, I'm not an expert and I know I can't be right everytime!

The reason Tangs and Butterflies are more prone to ICH is that there caoting is much thinner than most other species, which allows them to swim 25+ miles a day looking for food in the wild.

Saltyfish dude, sorry to hear about the ich problem. Believe me I've been there. The best way to treat it is to take all the fish out of the infected tank put them in a hospital tank and lower the salinity to about 1.010 - 1.012. Then let the main tank go foul. It takes 6 weeks for the ich to die off and leave the system.

I just went through this and it worked like a charm. I have a Hippo Tang which is very susceptible to ich. The hyposolinity got rid of the ich on the fish - took a few days. Then the loooooong wait (6 weeks) before putting the fish back in the main tank. They are doing great (knock on wood). Doing this also prevents gill damage caused by copper chemicals and other chemical treatments. Trust me this is the best way to rid ich. Good luck in whchever treatment you decide on.

Also, by using this method you don't hurt any inverts in your main tank - they aren't susceptible to ich anyway (never drop salinity in main tank if you have inverts).

I would never use MG in a tank that will or does contain, anything other than fish.
