Mike,

I moved this question into its own post so as not to get too far off topic from the origonal post it was attached to. (I know it is still on topic, but chances are your skimmer is different than the other member's). Hope you dont mind!?!?!

Anyways, this issue is something that happens to me quite a bit. In my case, with my Coralife Super Skimmer, it usually is a case of either a leak in the gasket between the skimmer and the collection cup, or a small hose that runs from the intake pump to the skimmer body itself has become dislodged or pinched. So, these are things for you to look at.

Also, a skimmer's performance has some correlation to the position of the skimmer in relation to the water line in your sump or tank. It may be an issue that you are creating when you top off your sump and changing that position between the water and the skimmer since obviously the water line gets higher when you top off.

What type of skimmer do you have anyways? (I think you had said at one time, but I cannot find the post if you did)

Hope this helps a little bit. I don't mean to say that you did anything wrong by posting in another person's thread, so please dont misunderstand, I just figured you could get more specific attention pertaining to your exact skimmer rather than a bunch of general knowledge that may or may not pertain to your system.

I woke this morning and darn thing is working just fine -Pump seconday sump is at where I usally add water and it was frothing before I added water. I'm sure as I noticed the funk in tapered up tube in catch cup. I keep water in sump a bit high to cover a pump for cooling but low enough for water in case power goes out , I don't have a big mess.. Anyway it's the exact same skimmer you have (Coralife Super Skimmer for 220 gal) and the airline was open , I just think it takes time for air whipping impeller to catch up, or enough evap ocurrued during the night? for that weird collation between sump depth and skimmer making foam and skimming properly to finnally occure . It Does (rom time to time)and will whip from a dead stop if your lucky -the magnets just gotta stay together and not skip off one another-it's same as priming a powerhead (only harder)but just leavng it run seems to work-this time anyway.(i'm leaving it on untill collection cup HAS TO BE CLEANED)
Thanks for quick responce as alwaays
ciao

LOL, I just looked at your pictures and saw that you have the same skimmer as I do. Mine will take off right away, but I almost always go without a skimmer for the first day after a water change. Next time I do one, which should be tomorrow or sunday, I will try that and see if I have the same issue. You know what I am talking about though with that one little peice of tubing that is on the skimmer though, right? If that is not connected, no bubbles. Also, there should be a round gasket that goes right inside where you screw the collection cup on. I went without mine for a long time because I did not notice it in the box and my skimmer runs A TON better with that gasket versus without it.
