Reputation Points?

First I like to say the rep point thing is a great idea!
But I have some questions in regards to them.
When someone give/takes points to someone, is it equal?
I mean for example if I give someone points is it the same amount as someone else w/ more points or a mod or something? How many points are given/taken at a time?
I am realitively new and don't know much about the point system and I've noticed more new folks on here and don't even see any mention to the point system...

From what i have gotten from it, the points seem rather random. if someone gives you rep points its not like you gain a point. its more like 10-20-30 something like that, im not really sure.

Hi Dr F.

Please allow me to explain the "reputation points" as best I can, and as I know them to be. This feature was initiated by the previous Admin of FTF, and as far as I know has continued forward.

It was designed as an additional method of providing its members with some ability to judge which advice to trust, although not to be the sole reason.

In short, if you were to come across advice which you feel is either highly positive, or highly negative in nature, you may click on the image of a scale located under the member's name and provide the appropriate feedback.

I would suspect that the green boxes indicate a positive reaction and purple a negative one, however I can't recall seeing many, if any, purple. This says to me that this is a very positive and friendly forum indeed, and that any negativity quickly becomes ignored and eventually leaves.

As to their value, I am uncertain. I can tell you that the four green squares under my name sum to a total of 320 points, which really tells me, well not much. I know I have received points from both Mods and members, and really have not been keeping track of it.

I personally, would like to see more of this feature being utilized, and perhaps it's good that you have brought up this question.

However, as I'm sure you can imagine, there is a potential for this being misused or otherwise abused (i.e. you give me one and I'll give you one). I have been assured that reputation points are closely monitored and reviewed by the Admin as well as the Mods, to insure their accuracy, and that they can and will be removed if they are warranted.

I hope this helps to clarify somewhat not only to you but others viewing this thread, and as stated, this is how I view it. If others have additional information on this you are certainly welcomed to add.

Oh, and BTW, when you do receive "reputation points" you can go into your CP and they are listed there and also indicate the thread in which you received those points, and the comments made. And depending on how long the thread is, you can often figure out who it was who gave it to you.

I really like the feature, Im not sure how much the feature is actually used. But ive been trying to remeber to use it, Because I do look at individuals rep often, and you can tell who has been around for a while and knows their stuff. But then again we have some people I have noticed (mostly new people) who know their stuff but have one green tile. But in time im sure they will be up there

I dunno it seems like greek to me i have tried in the past to add points when someone was really helpful and have only ever gotten (that I remember) one message when trying to do so something like
"you must spread around points before you can add any more" and there are 6 or so people I know for sure i have tried to click the scales for. (as they are some of the most active people I see in the forum I am sure you can guess who they are) but on the flip side it is those active members that really know their stuff that make you go "hey yah that is so true... so helpful...." and it has been several months and I may randomly think yes and try to click same answer. Even with someone That I hadnt ever seen before but had some really good insite. but still the same. flawed... maybe, strange... perhaps, Maybe the system knows I can't spell and holds it against me.

either way when I first got here I payed alot of attention to it, I learned who to trust. Now experience with all of you has confirmed it. Thank yall and have a good night

As far as the grey boxes are concerned, it means the user that gave the points can't give points yet? What do you need a certain amount of posts? That would be counterproductive in my eyes, say, you help a newbie and they are appreciative and give you "points" but they can't because you are new.
Do the points show up when they can give points?
Sort of confusing!

note two people it does not allow me to add rep to yall are great, and I have learned alot from both of you i am sure though that it has to be the thot that counts whether points show or not
